Round 5 roundup

Finally, in the 5th week of the 2012 season, all 3 senior league teams managed to play their respective league games on the same weekend. After weeks of bad weather and cancellations, it was a great relief to get the season back on track.

The 1st xi played in the first league game at the BCG vs St Georges. After winning the toss and electing to bat first on a pristine track in a match reduced to 45 overs, the 1st xi got off to a shaky start losing 3 early wickets by the time the score was on 22. Andy Flann and Charlie Wigley dug in to grind out a score, eventually scoring 29 and 18 respectively to put a score on the board of a mere 117 all out, not using all of their overs. With a below-par score on the board, the bowlers got to work and made a stunning start, taking 3 wickets with the score on 7. Wayne Phillips and Chris Stevens tore into the St Georges lineup backed up by a stunning fielding display with Chris Edenborough leading by example, both taking 4 wickets from their 13 overs. Todd Cornehls finished off the job with 2 for 1 bowling St Georges out for 95, giving the 1st xi a win by 22 runs and a fantastic result against one of the fancied teams for the league title having come down from the Birmingham League last season.

The 2nd xi finally got their season underway with a visit to Pontesbury. After being a victim of the weather for 4 weeks in a row, it was a big relief to see the 2nd xi out and playing at last. In a match reduced to 35 overs per side after having to wait for the outfield to dry, captain Ian Day called wrong and the 2nd xi got inserted. Matthew Jones Jnr top scored with 37 not out, supported by Ian Humphreys who made 23 and a total of 50 extras helping the 2nd xi get up to a score of 148 for 7 from their 35 overs. After making a good early start with 3 quick wickets, Phil Hartshorn and Robbie Hartshorn combined for Pontesbury to create a match-winning partnership, eventually getting over the line with only 3 balls remaining in their total of 151 for 4. Andrew Oliver was the best of the bowlers taking 2 for 47.

The 3rd xi game vs Hales got switched to an away game on Saturday with the National Village Knockout game vs Allscott having to take priority at the BCG on Sunday. In a battle of the top 2 in the league at the time, captain Chris Scott called correctly and stuck Hales into bat. Adam James was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 49 with Martin James, 2 for 57, and Jonathon Hughes, 2 for 2, ably supporting. Having been set 130 to win, the 3rd xi set about their task but after losing early wickets and being under pressure from a good bowling attack, the 3rd xi ended up hanging on for a losing draw, finishing on 84 for 9. Notable mention for junior member Craig Barker for batting out more than 10 overs to not allow the 3rd xi to be beaten.

After the fantastic win on Saturday, the 1st xi headed into the National Village Knockout game vs Allscott on Sunday with high hopes. However, going well and leading the way in the First Division of the Shropshire Cricket League, Allscott were going to be a tough opposition to defeat. Allscott batted first and were always under pressure from a good all-round performance from the 1st xi, eventually being bowled out for 93. Chris Edenborough and Ryan Davies set about the low target and were going well. Chris was trapped lbw for 20 and Ryan got a big leading edge falling for 40 with the score on 79 for 3. With only 15 to make for victory, a moment of West Indian Calypso Collapso occurred with the 1st xi suddenly finding themselves on 79 for 7 and 80 for 8. Tight bowling then meant no run off the bat for 52 minutes, the pressure eventually taking its toll as the last 2 wickets fell, bowling the 1st out for 90, losing by 3 runs and crashing out of the National Village Knockout.
