Round 4 roundup

Round 4 of the 2012 season saw the 1st & 2nd xi’s taking on Shelton’s respective teams on Saturday and the 3rd xi away at Welshpool 3rd xi on Sunday. The 2nd xi’s season still hasn’t got underway with another cancellation due to a waterlogged pitch but the 1st xi’s game at Shelton hospital got underway after a time spent watching the very damp pitch dry out.

After winning the toss and deciding on a 30-over game, Ian Gillespie duly invited Shelton to bat on the damp track. Chris Stevens continued his fine early season form taking 3 for 26 from his 9 overs, including a hat-trick all on his own, bowled, bowled and lbw. Tight bowling from the other end restricted Shelton to 36 for 5 but then ex-Bomere player Shaun Davis and Ben Chambers came together to form the match-turning and match-winning partnership putting on 120 for the 6th wicket. Davis was caught by Stuart Simpson when he was in the 20’s but the fielder had a foot over the very short boundary. Both men eventually fell in the final over, Davis for a blistering 83 off 75 balls including 8 4’s and 4 6’s and Chambers for 39 off 40 balls. Ian Gillespie took 3 wickets in the final over to end with 3 for 39 and Wayne Phillips took 2 for 36 but Shelton closed on a very creditable 159-8 from their 30 overs, a great recovery from the position they found themselves in earlier in the day.

Set 160 to win from 30 overs, the 1st xi set about their task after tea but were immediately in trouble with Andy Flann falling lbw to Shelton skipper Steve Griffiths in his first over for 0, followed by Davis’ day getting even better bowling influential Bomere skipper Ian Gillespie for 1. Early wickets continued to tumble with the 1st xi finding themselves on 24 for 5, a long way from the 160 needed to win. Sam Bloor (37) and Chris Edenborough (18) steadied the ship for a time but once they were out in quick succession, the final wickets fell quickly, including a fantastic leg-side stumping for Shelton wicket-keeper Martin Chambers off Jamie Martindale, meaning that the 1st xi suffered a 73-run defeat, picking up a mere 4 points.
