Round 19 Roundup

Round 19 of the 2012 season saw the 1st entertain high-flying local rivals Wem, the 2nd xi travelling into Wales to take on Montgomery and the 3rd xi playing host to top-of-the-table Prees.

The 1st xi’s game started off in the dry at bang on midday under darkening skies. 10 minutes later and the teams were off again with the covers on and the rain coming down. Not such a promising start then it would appear. However, half an hour later, the 1st xi were back on the BCG and hunting for wickets.

Tight bowling from Chris Stevens, despite a problem with running on the pitch, and the evergreen Andy McIlroy kept the runs in check. Both may have had a stack full of wickets if some decisions had gone the other way and some sloppy fielding hadn’t let the side down. McIlroy ended up taking the prize wicket of overseas professional Tim Hutchison for just 5 before bamboozling Russell Mellings out stumped by the returning Ryan Davies, taking 2 for 18 from 8 miserly overs. Stevens proved slightly more expensive but still returned figures of 1 for 55 from 15 overs straight – a great effort having not played for the best part of 2 months.

Captain for the day Todd Cornehls had the dangerous Martyn Davies caught on the boundary hooking for only 4 as Matthew Cohen looked to up the scoring rate making 50 before the heavens opened and lightning came down – I’ve never seen Charlie Wigley move so fast running from the cricket pitch. With the score on 108 for 4 from just over 33 overs, the match was abandoned as no more play was possible. The 1st xi picked up 6 points to Wem’s 5.

The 2nd xi ventured into Wales to take on Montgomery and things looked promising when the outfield proved to be relatively dry. However, the persistent rain had soaked the square and playing surface, getting underneath the covers and dampening the playing track. The venture proved to be unfruitful as the game was cancelled without a ball being bowled, the 2nd xi’s 10th game this season where a ball hasn’t been bowled. What a frustrating season 2012 is turning out to be. Only 3 more games to go though.

The 3rd xi welcomed top-of-the-table Prees to the BCG on Sunday afternoon in glorious sunshine. Invited to bat first, the 3rd xi lost early wickets to the Richards’ (Phillip 4 for 40 and Peter 1 for 28) before David Bailey and stand-in captain Martin James put on a 50 partnership for the 7th wicket. Bailey was eventually out for a well-made 40 and James for 18 leaving the 3rd xi all out for 112.

The Richards’ saw the visitors get to their target of 113 with 2 and a bit overs to spare; Peter making 37 and Phillip seeing the side home with 21 not out despite the best efforts of Steve Rumble (2 for 27) and a wicket apiece for David Bailey and Matt Jones Jnr.

After being unbeaten for the entire 2012 season, unfortunately the last 2 weeks have seen the 3rd xi slump to 2 defeats, one to the bottom of the league, and now to the top of the league. With 3 weeks left of the season let’s hope the 3rd xi can turn the minor blip around and finish strongly towards the top of the table.
