Round 16 Roundup

Round 16 saw the 1st xi travel to former Birmingham League opponents St Georges, the 2nd xi entertain Pontesbury and the 3rd xi at home to high-flying Hales on Sunday.

The 1st xi game got underway on time with heavy skies but were  however on and off a number of times in their total of 243 for 5 declared from 47 overs. Ian Gillespie was on cracking form once again making a fluent 116 from 112 balls being the dominant scorer in an opening stand of 146 with Dave Langton (29). Charlie Wigley continued to push the score on with 23 before some lusty blows towards the end of the innings from Ryan Davies (21) and Todd Cornehls (24) pushed the score on to achieve maximum 4 batting points.

Declaring on 47 overs meant that St Georges had 34 overs to try to achieve the win, with a more realistic target of 176 to gain the draw points. After a cracking start, the heavens opened for the final time leaving them high and not so dry on 53-0 with Mo Zaheer going like a train on 35 off only 29 balls. With the match abandoned, both teams gained 5 points with the 1st xi getting 4 batting points and St Georges 2 bowling points extra.

The 2nd xi entertained Pontesbury on the bad of their victory over Shelton in the previous round. With the forecast not looking very promising, stand-in skipper Andy Oliver asked the visitors to bat first after winning the toss. In a 35 over game, Pontesbury ended up being bowled out for 81 with 1 ball remaining, Jamie Dean taking a very economical 3 for 6, Andy Oliver taking 2 for 13 and Harry Bolland 2 for 38. John Morris was the only batsman to trouble the scorers making 32 in Pontesbury’s total of 81.

Darren Nudds (6) fell early in the 2nd xi’s chase with the next 3 batsmen all failing to get off the mark before the dependable Chris Davenport (15) teamed up with James Plant (30) to push the score towards the winning line. It was left to junior members Adam Muller (16*) and Craig Barker to see the 2nd xi home for another win and 20 points. Anthony Gray (4 for 15) and Ryan Davies (2 for 18) were the chief tormentors for Pontesbury.
