Round 10 Roundup

Round 10 saw the 1st and 3rd xi’s travel to the south of the county to take on Quatt and Ludlow respectively while the 2nd xi welcomed Newtown to the BCG.

The 1st xi beat Quatt today 104 runs.

After being invited to bat first, captain Ian Gillespie carried on his good 2012 form making his first century to add to 3 50’s already made in just 7 innings to make a classy 106. A second-wicket stand of 129 with Charlie Wigley (42) was the main feature of the innings leaving the 1st xi on 141 for 2 before a fight back from Quatt led by overseas player Jonny Lash (6 for 55) saw the last 8 batsmen fail to get into double-figures as the 1st xi were bowled out for 200. Craig Jones continued to plug away for Quatt ending up with 3 for 39.

After their good fightback in the field, Quatt started confident of chasing their target, however they lost their openers cheaply leaving them on 25 for 2 with captain Adrian Evans and close-season recruit Peter Thompson to rebuild the innings. Evans looked comfortable before being given out LBW to Chris Stevens for 16 while Thompson looked impressive in his top-score of 40 before Stevens took his leg stump. Chris Stevens, having not taken a wicket in his 2 previous outings, continued to bowl with pace and control to always trouble the Quatt batsmen ending up with 6 for 51 from 12.4 overs bowled straight through. Gillespie teamed up with him from the other end and bowled very accurately to take 3 for 9 including a great catch from Andy Flann at slip to see the back of the dangerous Craig Harris. Quatt continually lost wickets to fall for 96.

A great performance with the bat from Ian Gillespie and Charlie Wigley teamed with a fantastic performance with the ball from Chris Stevens was the reason for the big win. This is the second time in 2012 that the 1st xi has beaten the current league leaders with a previous victory over St Georges when they were top of the league. Next week the 1st xi welcome Newport to the BCG, hoping to make it 3 times that we will have beaten the team sat on the top of the table with a great team spirit and fantastic individual performances.

Scorecard of the 1st xi’s victory over Quatt

Unfortunately after the wonderful week of summer weather we had in the village, the 2nd xi’s game vs Newtown was cancelled due to unsuitable playing conditions.

The 3rd xi travelled down the A49 looking to retain their unbeaten start to the campaign against their counterparts from Ludlow.

Steve Rumble (3 for 18) and Jon Hughes (2 for 29) continued their good form from last weekend with the ball taking early wickets before Ludlow fought back thanks mainly to Simon Miles with his top score of 60 to lead Ludlow to 153 for 9 from their 40 overs. David Bailey plugged away to take 2 for 12 at the end of the innings.

With Rumble out cheaply, Chris Scott (53) and Ian Humphreys (23) set the 3rd xi along their way to their target but a host of cheap quick wickets fell soon after with the next 4 batsmen all out for less than 5. With wickets falling all around, Jon Hughes led the side home with a fantastic 27 not out including 2 big 6’s while the batsmen at the other end just held on to leave the 3rd xi on 157-9, getting to their target with 9 balls and 1 wicket to spare. Another 20 points sees the 3rd xi remain unbeaten and hot on the heels of leaders Prees.
