Opening League Fixtures 2012

Saturday 21st April 2012 saw the opening league fixtures for the 2012 season.

Unfortunately with the 2nd xi game vs Welshpool 2nd xi at the BCG and the 3rd xi game vs Quayside at Frankwell in Shrewsbury both victims of the weather, it was left to the 1st xi to make the long trip down the A49 to take on Ludlow in the only game played by BHCC in the first weekend of the 2012 season.

Captain Ian Gillespie called wrong and lost the toss and the 1st xi were invited to bat on a damp green track in dark overcast cold conditions at The Burway. The skipper then went about making amends for losing the toss by carrying his bat throughout the BHCC innings to make 88 not out from 144 balls including 8 fours and 2 sixes in very testing conditions, not least when a hail storm stopped play and covered the square in a white out. Other notable contributions from Ryan Davies and Sam Bloor, both making 20, meant that the 1st xi posted a very healthy total of 184 for 8 from their allotted 50 overs on a very slow track.

Due to the hail storm, the Ludlow innings was reduced to 41 overs, making the 1st xi’s task of winning even harder. Chris Stevens, however, had other ideas, steaming in to take 6 for 38 in 11.3 overs, taking the final wicket by bowling Simon Lane with only 3 balls remaining in the Ludlow innings. Jon Elfords made his debut appearance for BHCC and made a notable contribution taking 2 for 20.

The 1st xi therefore beat Ludlow by 46 runs with outstanding contributions from Ian Gillespie and Chris Stevens meaning that BHCC got off to the perfect start taking 24 points from their long trip to Ludlow.
