1st xi vs Wem

Wem CC

The 1st xi headed north to local rivals Wem to take on one of the form teams in the Shropshire County Premier League in 2014.

With the start slightly delayed due to a damp outfield, the 1st xi won the toss and batted first, looking to maintain their good form with the bat in recent weeks. Ian Gillespie carried his bat to make a critical 55* alongside fellow opening partner Andy Flann (45) whilst there were also runs for Chris Edenborough (22) and overseas keeper Tyler Siegert (23*) in the 1st xi’s total of 192-5 from 47 overs. Stuart Raine plugged away to snare 3-54 from 15 overs alongside Australian Gareth Dreyer (2-37).

Wem were immediately in trouble in reply finding themselves 18-5 with 4 wickets for Chris Stevens and a run out of the dangerous Dreyer. Matthew Cohen (62) looked like he might single-handedly pull the game Wem’s way, but a spell of 4-50 from Henry Dawson had Wem in a spin as they ended up short on 144 all out. Stevens ended with the spoils between the pair of bowlers fighting it out for the bowling honours for the 2014 season taking 5-18 from 12 tight overs whilst there was some resistance from Tom Astley (36) for the home side.

The 48 run win gave the 1st xi another 24 points and the 7th win in a row in all competitions for the away side who are now up to 4th in the Shropshire County Premier Cricket League.
