1st xi vs Wem

Wem CC

The 1st xi entertained wem looking to maintain the form from last weeks big win over struggling Newtown.

Wem won the toss and elected to bat first, but were soon in trouble at 17-4 with Chris Stevens snaring 3 quick wickets to take his tally up to 59 for the 2014 season. However, that was as good as it got for the 1st xi as Chris Peel (38) came together with Matthew Cohen to build a partnership and competitive total. Cohen ended up making a brilliant 114* after being given a life on 51 and another couple of close calls in Wem’s total of 207-7 as Stevens finished with 3-47 as the pick of the home side attack.

It was a similar story for the 1st xi’s batting display as wickets tumbled early as the 1st xi found themselves on 37-4 and 97-7 with Ian Gillespie (23) and Charlie Wigley (21) the only batsmen to give the scorers much trouble. However, a recovery occurred for the 8th wicket as Rob Dean and Andrew Gittins put on 59 together, at one stage looking like the 1st xi were going to pull off a very unlikely victory. But, with Gittins falling for 13, the last 3 wickets fell in just 4 balls as the 1st xi were bowled out for 158, Dean being left stranded on a very well made 59*, while Danny Cohen proved to be the pick of the away side attack snaring 5-29.
